Attend rush events, make informed pledging decisions

Interfraternity Council Vice President for Public Relations

We’re currently in the middle of rush. I hope that all underclassmen are taking full advantage of what every fraternity has to offer. From free food, events, trips to Montreal and New York City, and most importantly, getting to meet brothers and form friendships, there’s a lot more to rush than meets the eye. Greek life at Rensselaer is a very integral part of what makes this campus unique and adds to an even greater college experience. Don’t buy into the stereotypes that you may see and hear from movies and television and non-greeks. It’s those people who don’t know any better and mock something either because of ignorance or not a care in the world. You be the deciding factor in wanting to pledge a fraternity, and more importantly, the right one for you.

Think that all fraternities do nothing but party? Think again. Almost every fraternity here performs some type of community service at least twice a semester. Study groups with other brothers your year or older can be very beneficial if you are having difficulty in a certain class. Participating in IFC intramural sports is great if you can’t commit a large amount of time to a varsity sport here. Some of this campus’ most charismatic and standout leaders have been greek. Two out of the last three years, the President of the Union has been greek. Many Student Senate and Executive Board members, resident assistants, Student Orientation advisors, varsity athletes, and ROTC members are greek. What a fraternity teaches you will help go a long way while here and in the future. Take advantage of that opportunity.
