Tau Beta Pi mourns death of professor
Posted 09-16-2006 at 3:39PM
Michael M. Abbott, RPI professor emeritus of Chemical Engineering, died peacefully in his sleep at home on May 31, 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer. He earned his undergraduate degree and doctorate at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was a member of Phi Mu Delta, and where he made numerous life-long friends.
Professor Abbott had a passion for teaching; he was always available to mentor and advise his students, and continued to teach a class after his official retirement from Rensselaer. It was said that Professor Abbott was the advisor, professor, and mentor that every student and young faculty member wanted to be around and strove to be like.
He was widely regarded as one of the Institute’s preeminent educators. As one of his former students said, “He is the heart and soul of Rensselaer,” and his lasting legacy at RPI will never be forgotten.
