Top Hat New Big Red Stakeout begins next Monday

The Houston Field House, which originated in Rhode Island as a military warehouse, was moved to and reassembled on our campus in 1949. Upon its completion, RPI gained the “sports-civic arena” that we see today up on Peoples Avenue. Much has changed since 1949. Changes such as new seats, multiple renovations, and the removal of all but four pillars in the arena that obstructed the view from the stands have taken place. Something else has happened as a consequence of the improved seating though. The “Hockey Line” tradition has died.
For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, let me explain. From 1949-1983, pillars obstructed the view from the majority of seats in the Field House. Good tickets were at a premium. Because of this, groups of students would camp outside of the Union for weeks before tickets went on sale in order to secure the best seats for the upcoming hockey season. They brought TVs, couches, mattresses, video games, and other amenities from home. Traditionally, when tours would walk by, the “line sitters” would chant things such as “we want housing,” implying that they were actually homeless and not there by choice. It was really quite a fun event. In 1983, however, the pillars were removed and a girder was installed to make the view better from the stands. Because of this, the tradition of camping out to get seats seemed useless since all of the seats were now decent.
The proud tradition of the “Hockey Line” has declined over the last few years. Less than a handful of groups participated last year. This year, the idea of hockey line will be the basis for a new tradition on campus: the Big Red Stakeout. Starting at 3 pm on Monday, September 11, group registration will begin. Any fraternity, sorority, or other institute-recognized group will be able to register a spot in line at that time. At 4 pm, individual registration will begin. From that point on, there will be food, fun, and plenty of free stuff given away throughout the night. Anyone who wants to sleep is invited to do so inside or outside the Union. The next morning (Tuesday, September 12) breakfast will be served sometime before 9 am, at which point tickets will go on sale. The line will start to form around 8:30 am, and you will need the ticket that you’re given at registration to get in line. If you don’t show before 9 am, you will be put at the back of the line to buy tickets, regardless of your registration ticket. The team is going to be incredible this year, so I encourage you to participate in the Big Red Stakeout, and get your tickets next Tuesday! | |
