Allow me to respond to Jon Pappas’ column, “The Barstool,” with a little fervor and vehemence of my own with regard to your column in the April 26, 2006 edition of The Polytechnic.
I don’t believe for one minute we have dissatisfied students; just one ingenuous student—you. Let me name a few Rensselaer students who make me so proud to be a part of this campus. I see these wonderful students as ambassadors for Rensselaer: Michael Goldenberg ’06, Tamer Khattab ’08, Denisha McPherson ’08, Elan Mendel ’07, Sarah Merlin ’08, Jack Robitzski ’07, Elisa Sandvik ’06, Matt Weed ’07, Brendon Woodworth ’08, Bob Fornasiero ’08, Bryan Geiger ’06, Kimmie Johnson ’06, Will Manning ’07, Ferheen Shaikh ’07, Charlotte Williamson ’07, Andrew Zacher ’07 and Mitul Kanzaria ’06. These students have participated, and continue to participate, in campus visits orchestrated by the Department of Institute Advancement. They talk with alumni and friends of Rensselaer about their experiences being a Rensselaer student of today and get to hear from our alumni what it was like to be a student in 1948, 1956, 1962, or 1975. They discuss the new and exciting changes taking place on our campus, they discuss business, and do a little networking. Jon, our visitors love these students, and guess what Jon—nobody yawns. These students managed to find the time in their schedules, even with the “ridiculous workload,” to spend an hour or so with these individuals, and they do it semester, after semester, after semester. I often wonder how they find the time, but they do—they always do. My thanks to them is unending. They even find time to do more—like offering to take children and grandchildren of our visitors to the Rensselaer Bookstore for a looksie, to Ben & Jerry’s for ice cream, and to have dinner with them to answer question upon question about being a college student. I thank you once again, Bob Fornasiero ’08—you’re the best thing since sliced bread.
Jon, our students are not bored and really do find wonderful ways to blow off their steam, at least the ones I’ve come in contact with—and I’m in contact with many on a regular basis, which is the best part of my job.
Jon, it’s difficult to work “hard” and come out on top. But guess what, Jon, Dr. Jackson, most of our faculty, all of the staff, and 99.99 percent of our students work way, way hard and, yes, blow the competition away!! Like they say, if it wasn’t hard, everybody would do it.
You still bored Jon? Give us, Institute Advancement, some of your time. We’ll keep you busy and stop your yawns. How about the weekend of June 9th? Are you up for the challenge?
I dare you, Mr. Pappas. Are you going to sit on the lonely column of “The Barstool” and drink yourself into oblivion? If that is your choice, then go home Jon. Just go home, and don’t let the door hit you in the head on your way out.
