The time for apathy has ended. The changes regarding greek life are far broader than you probably realize. As a representative body for non-greek students, we, the Independent Council, realize that your initial reaction may be to think that this only pertains to greeks. However, you must realize that this is not strictly a greek issue. There are many problems with this plan that pertain to the entire RPI community, including us independents.
No student was consulted before this policy was announced to be non-negotiable. This is highly inappropriate, especially for a large decision regarding student life. This lack of student inclusion is entirely unacceptable and sets a horrible precedent that enables the administration to dictate student life policies without regard for the students’ wishes. Furthermore, the student body has not received any official language of these changes, and thus its reaction is hindered by lack of information provided by the administration. The combination of these factors allows for the autocratic creation of arbitrary rules, completely undermining students’ rights to access Institute policy.
These policies expand the Dean of Students Office’s jurisdiction to include properties not owned by RPI. This shows flagrant disregard for our rights, especially when students have not been included in the decision-making process. Should these plans be put into action, it creates precedent that allows DOSO to form legislation that dictates students’ behavior in their own off-campus houses and apartments.
I reiterate, this issue pertains to more than greek students; it pertains to the entire RPI community. By setting a horrible precedent, the administration’s directive threatens the rights of all students. If one student’s rights are violated, then all of ours are in jeopardy. If we give up an inch of our rights, we’re allowing for momentum that can carry a full mile. Independent students: It is time to stand up for the rights of all students on this campus. I urge you, work with your greek counterparts to the fullest extent possible. Stand beside them, and stand for yourselves.
