As the end of the semester nears, we have many events to look forward to. Personally, I look forward to the RPI Dance Club recital and the School of Engineering barbecue, since they truly signify end of the semester.

There is one special occasion, however, that really catches my attention around this time of the year. April 19-23 is the 8th Annual Community Service Celebration. It is a time of year when greeks and independents come together to really make a difference on our campus, in Troy, in the region, and even in the nation. I really love this event because of the way that people come together to do projects that may not otherwise get done. People put in effort that really improves the area that we spend so much time in.

Like always, there are many things that one can take part in—the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, the American Red Cross Blood Drive, spring clean-up of Beman Park, season preparation of Frear Park and Grafton State Park, spring cleaning of Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway, season preparation of Oakwood Cemetery, the OXFAM International Hunger Banquet, season preparation of Peebles Island State Park, painting the T-R-O-Y sign in Prospect Park, season preparation of Sunnyside Center Season Preparation, and the WMHT Public Television Great TV Auction.

The Community Service Celebration is a fun way to interact with your friends while still helping the community. You can sign up as a group or by yourself. You can even make some new friends through the event. I met a few awesome people through this, and look forward to meeting new people every year!

How does one get involved? Go to http://www.fye.rpi.edu/update.do?artcenterkey=378 and find the event you want to participate in. Click “register online,” and follow the instructions from there.

If you are worried about transportation, it is provided. CDTA has been a dedicated supporter every year and has graciously given transportation services to each of the locations. A t-shirt, bottled water, and work gloves (if needed) will all be provided.

Some people believe that there is nothing in Troy worth participating in. I really encourage those people to participate in this event. It really will change your mind and show you all that there is within this community. Instead of complaining about what a horrible place this is, become an active part of changing it to be a better, more exciting place. Many say this world is what we make of it, so let’s make it the best we can!

Any questions can be directed to Cynthia Smith at smithc@rpi.edu. Registration is open as you read this, so go ahead and sign up to partake in this wonderful opportunity!
