Rory Arrenondo
Interfraternity Council Vice President for Public Relations

This past weekend, I, along with other representatives from the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council, had the privilege of attending the Northeast Greek Leadership Association annual conference in Hershey, Pa.

The two day conference drew representatives from a variety of universities in the northeast and culminated in awarding greek associations in different categories for accomplishments throughout the previous school year, in which our Panhel won all four awards they applied for. The IFC applied for three awards and won two of them. Next year is already showing the great promise that both our associations will sweep every award category.

Each representative of Rensselaer attended different sessions that would help the betterment of greek life at RPI. Communicating with greeks on other campuses is actually a great way to learn how others deal with issues or how they promote their organizations and causes. It also sheds light on how other administrations view greek life and which steps are taken to work more effectively in order to create a strong relationship between both entities.

Sessions that were offered involved utilizing different recruitment strategies and techniques, promoting a positive image to ourselves, the local community and university, hazing, and motivating others and effectively engaging greeks who may not actively participate as much as others. I am proud to say that our greek system is already doing a good job of addressing certain situations and ideas that were mentioned throughout the weekend. Our next task is to determine what we can do to make it a model of excellence for others to follow. If there are any questions you have or specific information you need about what was covered, do not hesitate to contact an IFC or Panhel officer. We are here to help and shape our future.
