Write complaints, don’t just tell them to friends

RPI is well-known for many things. We should be proud of several of them, but there are others that aren’t quite so wonderful. The communications issues, for example, are rampant, even to the point of hiring a consultant to advise the faculty and administration on them. For the students, probably the biggest issue is apathy; who hasn’t heard a dozen jokes about how little the student body cares?

That is precisely the issue, because it is clear that there are many people who do care. Why, then, do we not hear about them? Certainly, there could be a number of reasons, but one that we have seen at The Poly has-been that most people simply do not speak out. When someone sees something wrong, the chances are that that person will just grumble and then not do anything, leaving the issue to fester until someone else comes along. Perhaps it is worse when there is something wrong and people do speak out, but only to complain. What can such feedback hope to achieve? Criticism can be very useful, but when it merely points fingers, the only purpose it serves is to annoy.

Every week, we publish articles, editorials, and reviews. Some of them are pretty standard, and some might even be a little dry. Some, however, are just the opposite; they raise a lot of issues that are controversial or raise awareness on topics that might be rather shocking. Some may be downright inflammatory. The depressing thing is that though we have heard that some people are upset with what we have printed, very few have actually written to voice their opinions. If you have something to say, come out and say it. If you think we or our columnists are wrong, tell us and them. Write to us—we would love to hear from you.
