The RPI women’s ice hockey team spent the weekend on the Northway as they traveled to Montreal, Quebec, to take on McGill on Friday and hosted their first home game in two months against Plattsburgh State on Sunday.

In Friday’s exhibition, the main story was the absence of Engineer junior Sarah Daniel. The team captain could not make the trip due to an issue with her INS paperwork. And so, without their second-leading scorer, RPI fell to the Martlets, 3-2.

After falling behind 2-0, Rensselaer made a valiant comeback effort in the third period with goals by freshman Emily Donowick and sophomore Brooke Thompson. It was not enough, though, as McGill forward Christine Hartnoll scored on the power play with just over two minutes remaining in the game to seal the deal.

On Sunday, with Daniel back on the ice, the Engineers outlasted SUNY Plattsburgh—the top-ranked team in Division III—3-2 in overtime. Daniel wasted no time getting back into the action, assisting on RPI’s first goal at 1:55 in the first. She would later score to give Rensselaer the 2-1 lead going into the final stanza.

Despite being out shot 11-4 in the third period, the Cardinals managed to knot the score at 2-2 with Danielle Blanchard’s unassisted power play goal at 17:48. RPI would dominate overtime, however, as freshman Nicole McDonald scored on the Engineers’ eighth shot of the period at 2:51. SUNY Plattsburgh, by contrast, took no shots in the overtime frame.

On Tuesday night at the Field House, the 17-5-2 Engineers beat Division III Williams 2-0. Needing only 15 saves for her second shutout of the season, senior goaltender Rosina Schiff broke two school records. The 39th victory of her career brings her ahead of Julie Vallarelli ’05 for all-time wins. Schiff was also starting her 60th game in net, moving ahead of Nina Lynch ’00 for all-time career starts.

Although the RPI women out shot Williams throughout the entire game, it was not until the third period when freshman Jaimie Jaquard-Sowa netted the first goal. Senior Julie Welte had the assist on McDonald’s 16th goal of the season to make the final score 2-0.

Hosting Quinnipiac for their final weekend of the season, they faceoff on Saturday at 4 pm and at 2 pm on Sunday.
