The Liberty League recently announced its 2005 Fall All-Academic Team, and 74 RPI student-athletes were recognized. In order to earn this honor, a student-athlete must be of at least sophomore athletic and academic standing and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.2.
Rensselaer sports represented on the All-Academic team were men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s tennis.
The Engineer football squad led the way with 17 selections. The men’s cross country, field hockey, and men’s soccer teams all boasted over 10 selections as well. Women’s soccer was just short of double-digits with nine honorees; women’s cross country and men’s golf each had five, and women’s tennis had two.
Wrestling pins competition
The RPI wrestling team headed into Thanksgiving break in fine fashion with a 36-18 victory over Bryant University on Sunday, November 20.
Freshman Kevin Bishop led the way for Rensselaer. Bishop was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the NCWA Northeast Conference dual meet. In his only official match, Bishop accepted a forfeit win in the 133-lb. class. He also wrestled two exhibition matches, winning the first by pin and the second by technical fall, 17-0.
“He looked like a man possessed today,” commended Head Coach John Jenkins, Jr. “He had the most confidence I’ve seen in him all season.”
Junior Rob Venditti also won for RPI. The captain dominated the 149-lb. class with a 23-6 technical fall victory.
Sophomore Ben Frost was given a tough assignment in being matched up against last year’s New York State Championship runner-up Jaret Grossman. The 174-pounder gave a valiant effort, but lost by decision, 10-4.
Coach gets honored
RPI assistant field hockey coach Bianca Dupuis was recently named to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey 25th Anniversary team.
Dupuis, the 1997 Liberty League Player of the Year, was a goalie for the William Smith Herons.
