A few points on fight song

To the Editor:

This is in response to Mr. Petrowski’s editorial of last week. First, I’d like to say that if I was overly harsh in my original letter, I apologize. I felt that your group’s blatant use of the “blahs” over a number of games showed a certain lack of respect towards the traditions of our fine school, but perhaps it was not your intent to mangle it out of insolence. The driving spirit behind that letter was education and the promotion of what I think is a great fight song, not accusation. I’d love to hear the song ringing from the rafters of the Field House.

Just a few last points: “True sons of Rensselaer” is from the old version of the fight song, created in the days when the ratio was more like infinity to one. It was amended in the years following the admission of women to RPI (1942) to the lines I attached to my original letter. The second line used to end “each man must do his part,” as well. I personally like the old version as it has a nice martial flair to it, but I suppose that’s neither here nor there. As for “Hear our thundering cry,” I don’t know—all my sources point toward “mighty shout.”

But why nitpick? Let’s Go Red!
