Here at RPI the words diet, nutrition, and exercise are words that are often overlooked when compared with words like exam, internship, or interview. But the fact is there is perhaps nothing is more influential on your life than your health. Health is defined as “the overall condition of an organism at a given time.” What condition do you feel you are in? What condition do you feel you should be in? These are questions we should be asking ourselves on a regular basis.
Eating correctly and exercising regularly can do nothing but good for you and your performance. Leaving RPI and heading to graduate school is a goal for many of us; for others it’s to begin a career that had once only dreamed about. Fantastic! It is a well known fact that RPI students are among the best and the brightest, and we are all setting out to change the world, but we cannot forget about the not-so-little things like diet and exercise along the way.
Getting good grades and earning a good salary is one thing, but there isn’t a price on good health and good physical condition. Those two things alone are, in my mind, the two most important ingredients to a prosperous life. It would be a shame if you spent the first half of your life working your tail off, and then due to a life of bad eating habits and no exercise, you weren’t able to fully enjoy the benefits of your hard work. Whether it be because you have developed diabetes or are suffering from any one of the multiple disorders and diseases brought on by a life of poor eating and exercise habits.
This column, over the course of the year, will help broaden knowledge about good eating behavior and exercise, and also how eating well and exercise can bring countless benefits into your life. For instance, did you know that your diet has a significant impact on your mood and mental performance, and that there are specific foods and diet techniques out there to keep you feeling great and acting sharp? That’s a topic to be covered later.
No one else is in control of your body but yourself and this column is here to help springboard you into a healthy life that anyone can achieve with a little effort, focus, and the right information. I am also a student of good health, and not an expert. The information I bring forth comes from readings, forums, advice, and my own experience. I feel I can comment and suggest ideas on health as a result of the knowledge I’d gained from these resources over time. This column is here to serve the RPI students and I hope it is a success.
