The RPI golf team finished its fall season last weekend with a second-place showing at the Violet Classic in Suffern, N.Y.

Host school NYU dominated the tournament with a two-day total of 592. The Red Hawks came closest to the surging Violets, with a two-day sum of 646.

Manhattan College, Nassau Community College, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy rounded out the competition in third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively.

Freshman Erik Thomas paced Rensselaer. The Troy native shot a two-over 74 on Saturday, and followed it up with a five-over 77 on Sunday. His weekend total of 151 put him in a tie for fourth place overall, behind NYU’s Matthew Frame, Kunal Rawal, and Charles Kerecz, and tied with NYU’s John Pharr.

The Liberty League applauded Thomas’ achievements, naming him Co-Rookie of the Week for the second straight week.

Senior captain Mike Fee and sophomore Steven Petsche also had strong individual showings, finishing tied for sixth and eighth, respectively.

Women’s tennis ends season at states

The Rensselaer women’s tennis team spent the weekend in Ithaca, N.Y., as they took part in the New York State Championship.

Freshman standout Progga Das and sophomore captain Erica Sherman were the only Engineers to survive the first round of competition. Das won her first-round singles match 3-6, 7-6, 10-6 over NYU’s Erika Olson, and the doubles duo of Das and Sherman was victorious in its first-round doubles match versus Hartwick’s Amanda Gerich and Grace Hughes, 8-6.

Unfortunately, both RPI competitors fell at the hands of their Vassar counterparts in the quarterfinals. Das was beaten by top-seed Kelly Graham, 6-1, 6-2, and the Das-Sherman connection fell to the also-top-seeded Graham and Debbie Sharnak, 8-2.

This marks the end of the 2005 fall season for the young squad.
