The RPI golf team traveled to Manchester, Vt., on Thursday for a dual match against Castleton State. The Red Hawks fell at the hands of the Spartans 305-325.
Castleton St. was led by freshman Josh Upson, who shot a three-over-par 74. The Spartans had the top three finishers on the day.
Rensselaer will travel to Elmira, N.Y., on Friday to take part in the Elmira College Invitational. That will be the squad’s last event before the Liberty League Championship, which will take place on October 1 and 2 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Head Coach Miles Nolan’s players will look to improve on last year’s fifth place (out of seven) finish.
Hamilton shuts out RPI
The Continentals came to Troy and simply dominated the Rensselaer women’s team on the Sharp Courts Tuesday afternoon, sweeping the Engineers 9-0. The loss dropped RPI to 6-2 on the season.
In the loss, Engineer freshman Progga Das suffered her first collegiate defeats as she fell 6-2, 6-1 in her singles match to Hamilton’s Kaitie Donovan and lost 8-3 with doubles partner Erica Sherman. RPI’s sixth-seeded singles player, Julia Houlden, was the only Engineer who even threatened to win. She took Hamilton’s Charlotte Kaplan to a third set but could not get over the hump, losing 6-2, 5-7, 10-6.
The Engineers will be busy in the next week with three scheduled matches. Friday, September 30, RPI will travel to SUNY New Paltz for a non-conference contest before returning home to take on Plattsburgh State on Sunday, October 2 at 12 pm and rival Union on Tuesday, October 4.
Hockey season almost here
On Saturday, the RPI men’s ice hockey team will open its season with the “Red/White game.” The game starts at 5:15 pm at the Houston Field House, and will be followed by “Skate with the Engineers,” an event that allows RPI students to take the ice with the Division I varsity squad.
