Two weeks ago, you got to hear my standard spiel regarding the Independent Council; who we serve and which events we run. Today I will tell you a little more about what we do not have written on a calendar somewhere, as it involves more than simply hosting a fun event for the campus to take part in. It involves your input.
The Independent Council’s prime objective is to ensure that the rights of independents, students not involved in social fraternities or sororities, are cared for. If an issue comes up involving on—or off—campus housing, dining, academics, or any other topic affecting independent students, we want to hear about it and help you in any way we can. If a group of students has even the smallest of issues, we will contact the correct members of the administration to voice that concern.
Often, members of the voting populace assume that their representatives will take care of the issues for them, without providing input or criticism of decisions they have opinions on. Avoid distancing yourself from the representatives you elected to decide on the issues for you. With positions on the Student Senate and the Rules & Elections Committee, the IC also has the voting power to make a difference in the areas that matter to you.
The IC is not coming to you with an idle promise. Please stop by one of our meetings on Tuesdays at 9 pm in the Rensselaer Union’s Student Government Suite. If you want more information, go to http://independent.union.rpi.edu/ or e-mail me at marcua@rpi.edu/.
