It’s been about three weeks since the freshmen began taking classes at RPI and they are now ready to leave their mark by being part of student government. There are currently a total of 18 expected candidates, which is already a higher number from last year, according to Kim Conway ’06, the chair of the Rules and Elections Committee..

Conway believes the campaign has been running well and pointed out that the candidates have been very enthusiastic and, in general, have followed all the rules and restrictions.

RNE, however, has met three times since campaigning began to discuss election issues. From these meetings, one decision, one warning, and one violation have been issued.

Of the 18 candidates currently planning to run, many of the offices are represented, including four for president, two for vice present, nine for senator, and three for class representative. Below you will find brief profiles of several of the candidates. The candidates profiled submitted their information to The Poly to be run in this issue and were asked, “If elected, what issues would you address and how will this affect the campus or members of your class?”

The election process consists of two stages: primaries and final elections. The primary elections are only held if RNE determines they are needed due to the number of candidates running.

The decision on whether to hold primaries this year will be made later this week. If they are required primary elections will be held on next Tuesday. The final elections are scheduled for Friday, September 23. The polling places will be in Commons lobby from 9 am–7 pm and in the DCC from 9 am–5 pm.

Freshmen should be prepared to vote on scantron ballots and have their RIN and Rensselaer IDs ready. There is usually a high voter turnout for freshmen because of where the polling stations are located.

Conway noted, “It’s important to vote,” since the leaders are elected to represent their constituents within the student government. She continued, “You want to be represented by capable people who can make a difference.”

Plans call for the votes to be tabulated by scanners and manual hand counting. The final results should be announced by 11 pm on Friday, September 23, in the Union Rathskellar.
