When cheese, Lithuania, and the Super Bowl are mixed together, it usually means only one thing: improvisational comedy. In the grand tradition of the TV show Whose Line is it Anyway, RPI’s only improv troupe, Sheer Idiocy, performed Saturday to a crowded McNeil Room.
The hour-long show involved such classic improv skits as Party Quirks, Stand-Sit-Kneel, Questions, and Musicals. It also offered unique skits, such as the preview of the Super Bowl (which told of the demise of ‘N Sync), a dream sequence of a little boy with homicidal toys, a Lithuanian spy storyline, and a call-in cheese-cooking show. (Warning: Moldy cheese may cause pregnancy.)
The skits that garnered the most laughs were Stand-Sit-Kneel, the musical entitled "Where are We?" the celebrity enhanced, cheese-promoting song, and the commercials in the Super Bowl preview. Some of the questions in the aptly titled skit, Questions, also got a lot of laughs, though they are not fit for print. The Idiots continually showed off their comedic skill by interweaving short skits made up on the spot with more traditional games and planned sequences.
Though the show had its slow spots, the audience seemed very responsive and appeared to enjoy that part of their evening. All in all, I’d say that the Idiots’ first show of the semester went off well, and I encourage anyone interested to check them out at shows later in the semester. Even if you are not sure if you will have a good time, they perform right on campus, and you can’t beat the price—free for RPI students.
In addition, if you are inter-ested in becoming an Idiot yourself, you may want to attend their workshop tonight from 8 to 11 pm. Sheer Idoicy can be seen performing next at the 12th Annual National College Comedy Festival hosted by Skidmore College on February 9–11.
