The staff of The Polytechnic congratulates the 2005 Poly Person of the Year, Operations Coordinator of the Student Union Jean Purtell.

Purtell was selected by The Poly’s Editorial Board, whose decision was based on various factors, including the online poll at //www.poly.rpi.edu/, from four distinguished nominees.

Purtell is a constant supporter of Rensselaer students and continually attempts to meet our needs. As noted by Beth Guikema, Assistant Coordinator of the Student Union, “[Purtell] is always around supporting student events…I think she is the most distinguished person to win Poly Person of the Year because she does so much for the students here.”

As noted by Cathy Ruff, Accounting Technician of the Student Union, “She is the perfect one for the job that she does…she really goes out of her way.”

Purtell is never hesitant to speak with students and she always provides time to address whatever concerns students may have. She is also an active member of the Rensselaer community and attends a variety of RPI student events.

Purtell has worked for Rensselaer for almost 10 years, and has been in her current position for five years. She is a dedicated worker and a model to many at Rensselaer. “I am doing a job that I love to do, and then I get this wonderful honoring…it is just overwhelming,” said Purtell.
