Gain experience, join the E-Board

Eventually we will all have to begin the grueling process of interviewing and applying for jobs, graduate schools, and programs that will lead us into the next chapter of our lives. One of the most frustrating elements of the process is that the decision does not lie entirely within our own circle of control. You may think to yourself, “if only they gave me this one chance I would do an extraordinary job. All they have to do is just believe in me. If given this oppurtunity, I could prove my leadership capabilities; all I need is this one chance.”

Some of you will not get the jobs of your first choice, the biggest signing bonuses, or the most lucrative offers, because companies may not view you as a top applicant. You could be labeled as an applicant that has not proven himself or herself in a professional setting. You will get responses from companies like, “You simply do not have the experience. You could have all the potential in the world, but where will that get us? We need people who have gotten results in the past, and will continue to do so in the future.”

The fact is that the only thing employers have to judge you on is your past. They firmly believe that what you have done in your past is what you will continue to do in your future. Some people may think that they can just wait until they begin their careers to gain leadership experience and excel in their jobs, but the truth is that it begins now, as students. Employers are looking for those who chose to get involved in college, who took every opportunity that was offered and continued to seek new challenges.

For those of you that are looking to expand your portfolio of experiences in order to illustrate your leadership capabilities, here is your opportunity. I am looking for students to be appointed to the 2005-2006 Rensselaer Union Executive Board. The E-Board allocates the $8.6 million student activity fee budget encompassing over 150 clubs and organizations and intercollegiate athletics. Each board member is responsible for a portfolio of clubs, managing their budgets and ultimately leading their direction.

Next year’s Board will make the decisions that will shape the Union for years to come. They are the most integral part of the Union. For those of you looking for the very highest level of responsibility and opportunity, the E-Board is for you. Applications are now being accepted and can be found in the Union Administration Office.

I will do everything I can to seek out the very best leaders on campus. Do not hesitate because you feel you have not had any student government experience, for I am simply looking for students willing to put the work necessary to position the Union within the Rensselaer of tomorrow.

So here is your opportunity; will you take advantage of it today, or regret that you didn’t tomorrow?
