Elections are now finally in full swing, as denoted by the blizzard of flyers now up all over campus. This year has been no exception to the election-related hijinks that always occur.
With the random postering initiative flyering random and funny logos all over campus continuing the long tradition of election-related mockery, a new, digital version of the normal lampooning is fast becoming the standard to make fun of elections and the election process. So far the only online GM Week election-related site to emerge is http://rpi.blogspot.com/, though this is a trend that I expect to continue in the future.
One organization notable more for its lack of presence, rather than their current operations is the Inanimate Object Party, long the bane of Student Government. While often lampooning the sitting Senate and GM, this is a group that, while still in existence, has yet to act. I only await what their preparations will culminate with.
However, there is a clear difference between the legitimate satire and the destructive vandalism of the work of campus politicians. Recently, the signs throughout the DCC and the CII were rearranged to spell “ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US.” While this may seem comical, and on its face, along the lines of the spirit of the normal election satire, this is in fact rather destructive to the students running in the election. Whether you know it or not, the candidates are under a myriad number of rules governing where signs may be positioned, how they can be affixed, and with what materials their campaign signs can be made out of. Destruction, rearrangement, and other shenanigans that affect the work of the candidates eventually makes the entire student body look foolish, rather than simply taking a lighter look at our system.
Please feel free to make this election interesting, but don’t destroy the hard work of the candidates.
