Despite falling behind 1-0 just two minutes into the contest, the Engineers rallied to defeat Division I UConn 10-2 last Wednesday night.
After the Huskies scored the game’s opening goal, the Engineers responded almost seven minutes later when Freshman Defenseman Mejanni Nixon scored unassisted. This was repeated less than two minutes later when Senior Forward Andrea Wadman scored another unassisted goal. The trend continued as Junior Defenseman Julie Durham notched an unassisted score, which would proved to be the game winner. Following this score Durham netted another, this time the assist went to Junior Jessica Malec. RPI continued to flex its scoring muscles as Senior Captain Cara Jones and Senior Forward Jamie Lalos each added unassisted scores.
In the second period, Wadman put another between the pipes, with the assist going to Senior Captain Libby Eldridge and Junior Captain Andrea Poley. This was followed by consecutive goals by Sophomore Forward Kristine DeRosa, with assists going to Junior Defenseman Kate Adams and Senior Forward Anais Cunha. UConn received a score from Melissa Bailey in the second, before DeRosa completed the hat trick in the third.
Senior Goalie Laura DeNuccio had 13 saves to help the Engineers capture the much needed win.
On Friday, the Engineers turned their attention to Wesleyan. Durham proved to be the deciding factor in this game as she scored a power play goal in the first period, before adding the game winner in the second. DeNuccio completed 18 saves to preserve the win, 2-1 after Wesleyan managed a goal 12 minutes into the third.
Suddenly, the Engineers had won two in a row for the first time other than the season’s first two games. The streak also ended a slide in which the team had lost six out of nine —including four in a row.
With newfound resolve, the Engineers moved on to play host to the Camels of Connecticut College. This game would prove to be a defensive struggle, as the first period proved scoreless.
Nearly seven minutes into the second, Adams put one past the Camels’ netminder, giving the Engineers the lead. Assists on the play went to Wadman and Jones. This score held for the remainder of the period, leading to an exciting third period.
In the third, things got really interesting when the Camels’ Lindsey Sunberg found the back of the net just a little over three minutes in. Suddenly the game was tied, and it was anybody’s game. The two teams struggled back and forth, as each killed penalties. It appeared that game was headed to overtime as the clock wound down under a minute.
But with just 28 tics left, the Engineers struck as Wadman sent home the game winner on assists from Adams and Durham.
With the three wins, the Engineers improve to 7-6-1 and move into a tie for seventh in the ECAC with a 6-4-1 conference record. The Engineers must continue to surge forward if they are to earn a spot in the postseason.
The Engineers will take on St. Michaels tonight, before hitting the road to play RIT and Hamilton in ECAC action this weekend.
