The Independent Council has received e-mails from students about their concerns. As the podium for the IC, this article is the perfect place to bring those concerns to light so that students become aware; Independent students need to be aware of the issues on this campus.
One of the first e-mails I received pertained to safety. Public Safety does a wonderful job patrolling our campus and keeping it safe. Students are aware of their presence and feel more comfortable with them around. The safety issue lies not with Public Safety, but in presentation of information from the department. If a crime is committed in or around campus, the nature of an activity is posted around certain areas of campus on regular paper. While this can be a perfect way to get the information across to certain students, as the most wired campus in the United States, communicating this information by electronic methods would be highly beneficial. Full campus-wide mailing lists exist in which all students are e-mailed information. Utilizing these mailing lists to send out warning e-mails about criminal activity would be the perfect means of communicating to the campus.
Another concern I heard from students surrounded the issue of printing around campus. As mentioned on the pages of The Polytechnic, most of the upperclassmen housing does not have easily accessible printing. In addition, students have e-mailed us speaking of a lack of Ethernet access in these residence halls. They have normal lounge areas, but unlike the freshman dorms, upperclassman housing does not have Internet capabilities in many of its lounges. This, for many, removes the option to work on group projects in the building leaving this privilege solely to freshman. It is only reasonable to provide the same facilities to upperclassmen that are offered to first-year students. Why should they be denied in house printing and Internet workstations?
This semester marks a new chapter for all students. The Independent Council hopes to open that chapter with change; changes that are needed on this campus. We will be addressing the concerns of students, all students. If you are interested in helping out in our efforts, e-mail us at ic@union.rpi.edu or join us at one of our meetings. The IC meets on Tuesdays at 9 pm in the Student Government Suite of the Student Union.
