Derby Changes unite RPI community

Peter Baldwin President of the Union It is the end of the semester and as classes are winding down, it seems the work load is finally coming to an end. The relief of another semester completed will soon come. The past few months have been filled with progress and achievement for the Rensselaer Community. We opened a world class research facility, began the first phase of a substantial athletic facilities upgrade, and celebrated the announcement of a momentous capital campaign. From the new landscape of freshman hill and renovated dormitories to the future of hospitality on campus, it is clear a commitment has been made to put Rensselaer on the forefront of higher education for years to come.
As a Union, we are by no means exempt from the progress of the Institute. We have a timeline implemented for the upgrade of dining facilities in the Rensselaer Union, beginning with new furniture and hardware installed this winter as well as other plans to improve the ambience of the Rathskellar. We have further expanded the use of technology in the budgeting process to make it more objective and user-friendly, with plans to give E-Board members real-time feedback on club spending and activities. E-Board member evaluation of clubs has been standardized with review forms keeping key factors of club success in mind: leadership, achievements, identifying impediments, and membership history. We saw new generations of students rejuvenate long standing clubs, while a number of dormant clubs came back with promising numbers. This was made possible by an aggressive marketing approach for the Activities Fair as well as other avenues of advertising to continue to fulfill our purpose in uniting all members of the Rensselaer Community and expanding extracurricular life.
By no means will the road ahead be easy, and institutional change of this magnitude never comes without a cost. However, I believe if it were not for the Renaissance at Rensselaer we would have been unable to claim our place as a world class research institution in the 21st Century. This is not just a time to reflect on our current achievements, but on the storied history of Rensselaer that has continued to push the bounds of science and technology for the common purpose of life as set forth by our founders. | |
