Since early November, the Department of Public Safety has been involved in investigations on a number of assaults that happened near campus.
Lieutenant Joe Audino said that the lack of cooperation from the student victims make the cases impossible to solve. "We want the Troy Police to assist us in this, but since the students don’t want to talk, the police can’t do anything about it," he said.
"Student cooperation is very crucial in this investigation," said Audino. He urges everyone who knows more about these attacks to contact Public Safety.
In one of Public Safety’s efforts to attract the assailants, Officer Tyson Ruecker wore plain clothes, carried a backpack like any student, and walked around Barton Hall and the Sage Avenue area, but no confrontation took place.
Some of those assaults appear to be related, but the causes and the suspects have not yet been identified. "In all the previous incidents, no money was taken and the only apparent motive seems to be assault," said Audino.
—Students in the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity were the first to report an assault in November, when an unknown group forced their way into the house and injured two of the students there.
—The very next day, on the corner of 15th Street and Peoples Avenue, a student sustained injuries to his face when two males assaulted him. The student was hospitalized and missed three days of school due those injuries.
—"Around that same time, a student alone on rollerblades was struck by a person who came out of a white van," said Audino referring to another assault. Although the student was knocked to the ground, he was able to get up and run for safety.
—On December 15, after a time period of nearly a month without a report, a white male assaulted a student while walking by Barton Hall on Sage Avenue. Two other people also accompanied the attacker, and they exited a white minivan together. The student was punched in the face but did not sustain injuries.
—"That same evening at 10:20, another student was assaulted while walking in the area of 19 Sherry Road," said Audino. The student reported that three suspects, one wearing a yellow shirt, walked up to him and started kicking and punching him.
"The student had facial contusions and a possible broken nose, but would not cooperate with the investigation, refused medical treatment, and would not offer any details that could help solve the crime," said Audino. The student would not talk about the incident until after Officer Robinson agreed to leave the room.
Audino said that the last two incidents are very similar in time and method to the incidents in November, but different in the type of vehicle used, the number of suspects, and variation in some of the descriptions. "The only true similarity is the method and the apparent motive not being robbery," he added.
