Junior Matt Murley’s goal, with just 1:06 remaining in the third period, capped an incredible come-from-behind win by the Engineers, and left Yale fans in stunned disbelief.
Checking into the game on Friday, December 8, both teams had seasons that went like rollercoasters. Yale had knocked off several top teams early, before falling to 5-6 overall. The Engineers had beaten BU on opening night and then lost the season series to Union for the first time.
It appeared early on that the Bulldogs had Lady Luck on their side. This started in the first when a loose puck found its way out to the blue line. Robert Mutter wound up and prepared to blast one, but didn’t connect solidly. Instead the puck was deflected off of several players in front of the net and got past Freshman Goaltender Kevin Kurk.
In the second, the Engineers fired back. Sophomore Marc Cavosie dished the puck to Junior Jim Vickers who put it between the legs of Yale Goaltender Dan Lombard to tie the score. The Bulldogs responded on a power play when Ben Stafford wristed one past Kurk. Later, Yale rebounded their own shot and Jeff Hamilton scored a goal that sent Kurk to the bench in favor of fellow Freshman Nathan Marsters.
Then the third period came around. The Engineers opened it in fine fashion as they scored a power play goal just 24 seconds into the period. Vickers took a shot from the point which Sophomore Carson Butterwick deflected over the shoulder of Lombard. "I was lucky enough to get enough wood on it to get it over the goalie," said Butterwick.
A little over eight minutes later Murley struck for his first goal as he slapped one past Lombard. The score came on a power play after Lombard had stopped a shot by Butterwick. But, in extending to stop the shot Lombard left himself open and Murley seized the chance.
The Engineers had another power play opportunity, this one coming just three minutes after the previous score. Sophomore Danny Eberly charged down the left side of the ice and sent a shot towards the net. Lombard managed to stop the attempt, but the rebound landed right in the lap of Sophomore Nolan Graham. Graham promptly sent the puck home past an outstretched Lombard.
But, the Bulldogs proved to have life yet. Trailing 4-3, Jason Noe managed to sneak one past Marsters, who was out of position attempting to play a rebound. This led up to Murley’s second goal.
Murley got the puck at the blue line, skated around several players and wristed the puck past Lombard to give the Engineers the victory. "He was a guy that was on a mission that wasn’t going to be denied," said Head Coach Dan Fridgen.
Fridgen was happy with the win and noted that "I think we stole one here because you’re not goint to win many games by losing two periods."
"You could tell that we wanted it more," said Murley. Fridgen might have summed up the entire game when he said, "It shows you how important 20 minutes can be."
The Engineers are hoping that this twenty minutes will help put their season back on track.
