Derby RUFest precedes Black Friday game
Posted 11-03-2004 at 4:16PM
Peter Baldwin President of the Union Yesterday, Americans went out to the polls and demonstrated their most important role as citizens, voting in a free election. We enjoy a standard of living almost unmatched by any other country in the world due to innovations and new technologies that have spurred an ever expanding economy. We have become the primary defender of democracy and freedom across the globe. This year’s presidential election has been one of the closest in history, and has drawn partisan lines across the country. As Americans we must support whoever is elected, for they are our Commander and Chief and leader of the free world. We all come from different backgrounds, whether conservative or liberal, we must stand behind our leader in times of prosperity, but also in times of uncertainty. Our generation has been blessed in that we have not had to go through some of the darker times in our history. We have not had to take part in a military draft, had to put our personal ambitions on hold to support a war effort, or experience a depression in which a quarter of the country is unemployed. So consider the fact that the issues dividing us are small compared to what we all have in common as Americans and the values we share.
This coming weekend offers a number of events offering opportunities for students to show their school spirit and pride. This Friday, make sure to stop by the Rensselaer Union Festival, or RUFest, for some free food and prizes. That evening, our hockey team will take on our heated rival Clarkson in the second annual Black Friday hockey game. Make sure to wear something black and get free admission. The greatest hockey player to ever take the ice for Rensselaer, and quite possibly one of the best ever to play the game will be in attendance. I am referring to Adam Oates, who will be coming back to campus to be honored at the game and inducted into the RPI Athletic Hall of Fame. This was the man the led the Engineers to their second NCAA National Championship in 1985, and his presence will surely bring additional anticipation and excitement to Friday’s game. As if we really need any more when Clarkson comes to town. Which reminds me: one minute…and Clarkson still sucks.
I have always come to enjoy this time of the year; we are deep into the football schedule while the hockey season heads into full swing with the anticipation of a strong year. The campus is full of color and life as the leaves begin to fall and the winter sets in, so get out and enjoy the events. | |
