The Rensselaer Red Hawks women’s soccer team finished their Liberty League schedule without a win, losing 1-0 to the Skidmore Thoroughbreds and 6-0 to the nationally-ranked Union Dutchwomen.

RPI took the field on Friday against Skidmore, looking to build on the momentum they had from winning their first game of the season against Hartwick. The first half was an even affair, with both teams getting off five shots a piece. Both goalies and defenses refused to break, not letting the ball find the net.

The best chance in the half for either team came with 17 minutes remaining, when senior Anne Drames took a corner kick for the Red Hawks. The ball went in and found the head of classmate Jessica Chetuck, who headed the ball towards the goal. The Thoroughbred defense blocked the header and tried to clear it out. The clearing attempt fell to the foot of junior Katie Lavelle, who shot the ball just wide of the right post.

Rensselaer came out at the start of the second half, putting on the pressure and getting some chances right out of halftime. Skidmore goalie Liza Mills and the Thoroughbred defense were up to the task however, keeping the ball out of the net.

In the 69th minute, Cari Dugan got a hold of the ball near midfield and sent a pass to Morgan Caldwell down the left side. Caldwell took the ball toward the RPI goal and fired a shot that got by a diving Jackie Gabrielle and found the side netting to give Skidmore a 1-0 lead.

The Red Hawks had a chance to tie the game three minutes later, when junior Rebecca Primm received the ball and dribbled toward the Thoroughbred goal. Leigh Stokey challenged Primm, but Primm got around her along the end line and got a cross into the 18-yard box to freshman Sarah Briggs.

Briggs tried to get a shot off but a Skidmore defender blocked the shot out across the end line. Drames took the ensuing corner kick, but the Thoroughbred defense cleared the ball out to safety.

RPI continued to put the pressure on, but the Skidmore defense wouldn’t crack and the Red Hawks walked away with their seventh one-goal loss of the year.

Mills made five saves for the 11-4 Thoroughbreds, while Gabrielle finished with six saves.

RPI returned to the field on Saturday looking to finish Liberty League play on a positive note. However, Union, the 15th-ranked team in the nation, had other plans, completely dominating the game, out-shooting the Red Hawks 35-5.

Gabrielle and the Rensselaer defense kept RPI in the game during the first half, allowing only a 14th minute goal to Cassandra Mariani off a rebound. In the second half, the Dutchwomen figured out the Red Hawks defense, netting five goals on 12 shots and walked away with a 6-0 victory.

Julie Gawronkski had two saves for Union, who improved to 14-1-1 on the season. Gabrielle recorded eight saves and Regina Primm, who replaced Gabrielle in the 63rd minute, made one save for RPI, who now stands at 1-10-1 on the season.

The Red Hawks, who played the Rochester Yellowjackets yesterday, losing 3-0, finish their season today at 1 pm on Harkness Field when they take on the SUNY New Paltz Hawks.
