Derby Union supports students

Peter Baldwin President of the Union As a leading technological institution, Rensselaer provides students with the tools and skills to succeed in the 21st century. As students, we are given thorough instruction in mathematics and the sciences so that we may be competent decision-makers initiating change in technology-based careers. With all the technical information that must be absorbed, there is little time left for the development of expression in the arts. Someone may have a revolutionary idea or innovation, but if he or she can not articulate and express their thoughts it will never materialize. The Union has been has always acted as a supplement to your education, but it also acts a supplement for students to showcase their talents, thoughts, and ideas. Rensselaer has made a commitment to enhancing this part of our education in the Rensselaer Plan. Take the construction of the eMPAC Center, whose very purpose is to provide students with an outlet for expression through the arts. This is just one example of a continuous effort to broaden your educational experience.
This past week the Union’s Executive Board made a stride in this direction with the approval of the another substantial piece of equipment that the RPI TV Club needed in order to continue growth. The Board approved contingency money for the purchase of a video switcher, made possible partly due to a generous contribution from the Office of the President. Last year the Board made the decision to make a significant investment in the future of the RPI TV Club with the approval of a relatively large upfront purchase of equipment. Previously, the club had been operating through IT Operations, and post-production of film took anywhere from fifteen to twenty hours. With the new switcher the club will now have the capacity to turn around material in a fraction of the time. RPI TV has done a commendable job in its short existence, evident by the production of over twenty programs since the beginning of the year. It was clear the members made a commitment to the success of this recently founded club, and the Board responded with a substantial financial commitment on the Union’s part.
By facilitating the growth of the RPI TV Club, the Executive board has directly affirmed our purpose as a Union, in that we are to act as a medium through which student opinion may be expressed. As a Union, we have a responsibility to provide students with the means for recreation and activity. As a technical school, we have a large number of students that arrive at Rensselaer interested in the making and production of television, and now we have the resources to meet their interests. This is just a small example of the Union’s longstanding tradition of enabling students, making their educational experience just a bit more enriching. | |
