Preceding the break the Red Hawks played host to the Gators of Russell Sage. While the second half proved a little closer, RPI came out strong in the first half and built a 16-point lead that they would never relinquish, cruising to a 56-40 win.
Senior Shannon Pratt lead the way with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Senior Kristen Campbell netted 13 points. Junior Co-Captain Melissa Coppola netted 9 points and was strong on the boards with 10.
Next up for the Red Hawks was Southern Vermont. This game was a blowout, pure and simple. The Engineers started off strong and never looked back en route to a 84-22 win.
Coppola had another strong game with 12 points and seven boards, while Campbell added 12 points on six-of-eight shooting. Senior Co-Captain Kate Shulten and Freshman Kristin Kaczynski each netted 10 points. Sophomores Jo Alexander and Karen Wood had 8 and 7 points respectively, while Pratt contributed 7.
The Red Hawks defense allowed only two players to score, but Kyla Cornelious managed to net 16 points for the home team.
For their final game of the first semester, the Red Hawks were on the road at Green Mountain. This game proved to be a close one, but RPI pulled out the win, 67-62.
Junior Holly Neiweem had her first big game of this season, netting 19 points, while Shulten collected 12 and had seven boards. Campbell put up 11 points to go along with six boards.
During the break, the Red Hawks traveled to Springfield to compete in the Springfield College Holiday Inn-Naismith Classic. In the opening game, RPI faced Amherst in what proved to be a close contest. Despite trailing by 12 at the half 30-18, Rensselaer made a second half comeback before falling by a final of 53-50.
Coppola put in 12 points and pulled down seven boards. Campbell had 10 points and eight rebounds, and Freshman Alyssa Comis added 9.
In the consolation game the Red Hawks built a 14 point first-half lead and won by a final of 69-56.
Coppola had yet another strong game, totaling 15 points and eight boards. Neiweem added 11, while Campbell had 8 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Marianne McCabe hit for 8 while Kaczynski had 9.
The Red Hawks head into UCAA action this weekend when they take on William Smith and Hamilton in the Armory.
