Interfraternity Council
Greeks need to remember goals

Donald F. Pendagast III
Interfraternity Council Vice President for Public Relations

As if we do not have enough to do—of course as we all gear up for mid-terms and other not-so-delightful exams—I would like to take this time to recap some things we should all keep in mind.

If you were able to attend the previous 2004 Greek Leadership Retreat, in January, you might recall the goals and hopes that were outlined and discussed at full length. The four goals we outlined were (in no particular order): establish personal relationships, generate excitement about the greek community, encourage more campus involvement; and finally create better communication with the Troy community. Please take a moment and think about these goals; where do we stand with each of them? I say we, because we are a community, and needless to say we need to start acting as such.

Without sounding cliché, let us all reflect on what we say and align those ideas with how we act. In other words, when you begin to feel frustrated about something (e.g. student life issue, our website, the administration, etc.) remember there may be other students who are in agreement with you; beyond a doubt there are those who want to listen and work with you to bring about improvement.

Innovation. Renaissance. These are some of the buzz words used by many on our campus. Why are we greeks not taking them to heart? This is not the appropriate place for me to ramble about specific events, chapter programming or whatnot, but I encourage you all to think seriously about the stated goals at last year’s leadership retreat, and feel free to contact me, pendad@rpi.edu. I would love to chat and bounce ideas back and forth.

The Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Council have both jumped aboard as co-sponsors with the Rensselaer Pride Alliance in a Halloween Drag Show charity event on Friday, October 29 from 7:30 to 9:30 pm in West Hall. The event will benefit the Damien Center of Troy and Make a Wish Foundation. Admission is $5 for students, $8 for faculty and staff, and $10 for non-RPI attendees. Some have even described this event as “fabulous,” and “decadent.” We would love to see many, many people there, so come out and support these local charities!
