After a rocky start, the Red Hawks have surged in Liberty League play.
The red-hot RPI field hockey team is on a three-game winning streak, the latest win coming at the expense of the Vassar Brewers.
The Red Hawks and Brewers played a defensive battle through the first half, with each team holding the other scoreless. RPI held off four Vassar penalty corners, but could not convert on three of their own. Amanda Lund stopped the only shot she saw in the first, and Vassar goaltender Ellie Pomerantz stopped all four RPI shots on goal.
Vassar got on the scoreboard first, when forward Kate Ross fired the ball into the net off a feed from midfielder Catherine Twardy.
RPI captain Sondra Sherman broke the shut-out for Vassar’s Pomerantz at the 53 minute mark. Sherman pushed the ball past Pomerantz, assisted by junior defender Elisa Prange.
Five minutes later, Sherman and Prange hooked up again to put the Red Hawks up 2-0. At 58:49, Prange’s second assist of the game came when she hit a streaking Sherman, who put the ball home for her 11th goal of the year.
Lund held the Brewers scoreless for the last 12 minutes of the game, making three saves in the second half and four total.
For their efforts, Sherman and Prange each earned Liberty League awards. Sherman was name Co-Offensive Performer of the Week and Prange was named Defensive Performer of the Week. This is the second week in a row that the Red Hawks have won each of these awards; last week, Sherman was Offensive Performer of the Week, and Lund earned the award on the defensive side of the ball.
Sherman is at the top of many offensive categories in the Liberty League. She is first in the league with 11 goals scored and 1.38 goals per game; second in the league with 22 points, 2.75 points per game, and a shooting percentage of .458; and third in the league with three game-winning goals.
Lund is also near the top in goaltending categories; she is second in the league with a goals-against average of 1.44, tied for second with two shutouts, fourth with 57 saves, and fifth in saves per game, with 8.14.
The Red Hawks are now 3-0 in Liberty League play, and 5-3 overall. They are currently tied at the top of the division with perennial powerhouse William Smith. They will look to continue their success against Hamilton on Friday and St. Lawrence on Saturday.
