Sorority recruitment officially ended last Wednesday with 31 ladies signing bids to join Rensselaer’s sororities, and all the houses are extremely excited about getting to know their new members. The Panhellenic vice president and assistant vice president of recruitment, as well as the recruitment chairpersons of each sorority, carried out a very successful fall recruitment.

The Panhellenic Council is renewing its commitment to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeastern New York and already has plans in the works to raise the remainder of the $6,000 pledged last semester. There will be a walk for the foundation on October 23, the rain date will be the following day. We hope that all students on campus will participate in walking to raise funds on a to-be-determined route. You may contact krajej@rpi.edu for more information or direct donations.

For another Make-A-Wish fundraiser, the Panhellenic Council is partnering with the Rensselaer Pride Alliance to present a drag show on Halloween weekend. We expect acts from all groups on campus to put on a show “dressed in drag.” Fifty percent of monies raised from admission will go to the Damien Center in downtown Troy, a counseling center for community members suffering from HIV or AIDS. Twenty percent of the revenue goes to Make-A-Wish and the remaining 25 percent goes to the best act in the drag show!

Other projects to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeastern New York include letter-making for fraternities (contact gollik@rpi.edu for more information or to place an order), and sales of “Go Greek” mugs and Rensselaer fleece scarves at sporting events.

In addition to fundraising, the Council will be performing other community service, such as working Mental Health Week (the week of October 26) to help the Health Center promote emotional well-being. Council members will also tend to the AIDS quilt on December 1 to raise AIDS awareness. Finally, donations for care packages to send to soldiers abroad will be taken in the Union by Panhel and the Independent Council; on a date to be determined.
