Let UPAC show movie

To the Editor:

It has come to my attention that an objection has been raised, by the RPI College Republicans, to the showing of Fahrenheit 9/11 movie by UPAC Cinema. I believe that the RPI College Republicans objected to the showing because they felt that it would constitute a political event funded by the Rensselaer Union.

I strongly disagree with their point. If the same logic was applied to other UPAC showings, the RPI College Republicans could block Harry Potter, arguing that the movie subverts their predominant Judeo-Christian faith and supports Mysticism. Fahrenheit 9/11 does not endorse a political candidate and it is intended for entertainment purposes. As a recent graduate of RPI, a member of the RPI staff, and a registered Republican, I urge you to dismiss the objection of the RPI College Republicans to UPAC’s showing of Fahrenheit 9/11.

Rensselaer is a place of tolerance and diversity. We seek to open doors to the future and unite the groups that constitute the melting pot that is RPI and the United States. Petty arguments that divide school functions up by demographics or ideology are not consistent with the mission of the Institute nor is it in the best interest of student life.
