What a difference a half can make.

The Rensselaer field hockey team surged for five goals in the second half, defeating the Lakers from Oswego State 5-0.

The offensive pressure was crushing for the Red Hawks in the first half. They dominated in every offensive category, but could not find the back of the net.

Despite out-shooting the Lakers 10-2, the Red Hawks did not manage to push the ball past Oswego State goalie Ashley Perkins. Perkins made four saves in the first period.

The Red Hawks also dominated in penalty corners. RPI received seven penalty corners in the first half, and gave up none to Oswego State.

The second half had the same story, with a totally different moral. The Red Hawks kept the offensive pressure high, and scored three minutes into the period. Senior Elisa Prange found the net at 38:48 to give the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Rensselaer freshman Michelle Clemente scored the next two goals of the game, both unassisted. The two goals, coming at 44:35 and 55:53, gave the Red Hawks a 3-0 lead.

Co-captains Laurie Young and Sondra Sherman capped off the scoring for the Red Hawks, each scoring an unassisted goal.

The Red Hawks’ domination of shots continued throughout the second half, out-shooting the Lakers 24-6; 34-8 overall.

RPI got nine more penalty corners in the second half to push the total to 16.

Jen O’Neil played well in goal, making five saves in 51 minutes of play. Liz Szewczak finished the game out, but did not face a shot.

RPI is in action today at Hartwick, taking on the Hawks at 7 pm. They continue their road trip Saturday at Drew. They return home Tuesday, to take on Keene State at 7 pm.
