The Rensselaer women’s lacrosse team got a combined seven goals and an assist from seniors Mary Roy and Mary Beth Cooley in their 15-4 victory over the Vassar Brewers last Wednesday on Harkness Field.
The Red Hawks controlled the tempo from the start, peppering Brewer goaltender Sarah McKenna with 16 shots, scoring six goals in the first half. Freshman Emily Carroll got the scoring started for RPI, putting a Hillary Lahn pass past McKenna just 2:15 into the contest.
Roy put two of her four goals in the back of the net in a four minute span on free position shots to give the Red Hawks a 3-0 lead. Eight minutes later sophomore Erin Campbell put Rensselaer up by four when she put a shot past McKenna off an assist from classmate Rebecca Primm.
Cooley would get the final two goals in the half for the Red Hawks sandwiching a Vassar goal by Ali Fantl.
The second half was much of the same for RPI as they put in the first six goals of the half on 10 shots to take a 12-1 lead. Primm was the main threat, scoring two of the goals, the first one off an assist from Cooley.
The Brewers finally put a little pressure on the Red Hawks midway through the second half scoring three of the final six goals but it was too little too late as RPI cruised to the victory.
Junior goaltender Meghan Gaul had a fairly quiet game, but when tested she was up to the challenge, making five saves on nine shots on goal.
With the win the Red Hawks improve to 5-4 on the season and 2-2 in the UCAA.
Rensselaer makes their final road trip of the regular season this weekend when the team travels to the North Country for two important UCAA battles against Clarkson and St. Lawrence. The Red Hawks take on the Golden Knights on Friday at 4 pm and the Saints on Saturday at 2:30 pm. RPI returns home Tuesday for their final non-conference contest against Nazareth on Harkness Field. Game time is 4 pm and admission is free.
