Track sweeps Engineers Cup

Rensselaer remains undefeated with home triumphs

The weather held out for the Rensselaer track and field team this Saturday, April 3, when they hosted the Engineer’s Cup at the Harkness Track and Field. Both the men and the women’s teams dominated their rivals from MIT and WPI with many strong performances.

The women’s team won their meet with a combined score of 174 points, with many of the athletes scoring in each event. Placing in both hurdle events for the women was Jen Dias, who won the 400m hurdles in 1:05.87 and placed second in the 100m hurdles with 16.79. In other sprint events, the women had Becky Lock placing third the 200m with 28.13, Alysia Evanitsky placing second in the 400m with 1:01.43, and teammate Erin Coffey taking third in the 400m with 1:02.70. In the 800m, Alyssa Coffey won the event in the time of 2:20.79 and teammate Michelle Fisher took second place in 2:27.85, both with a large lead over their competition.

In the distance events, the team had Rebecca Rosenberg-Beran winning the 1500m in 5:02.47 and placing third in the 5000m in a time of 19:53.00, Lauren Carter placing second in the 5000m in the time of 19:39.36, and Johanna Primmer placing third in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 13:29.07. The women’s team also took first place in the 1600m relay with a combined time of 4:10.72.

On the field, Heather Maffei placed second in the shot put with 42ft 10.25in and won the high jump with 1.32m, while teammate Chiamaka Nwaizu took second in the high jump with 1.32m and third in the triple jump with 35ft 10.50in. Allison Benson won the pole vault with a height of 10ft 10.00in and Cara Rosato placed third in the event with 9ft 10.00in while Carol Scalice won the long jump with a mark of 17ft 0.75in.

Sue Madden won the shot put with a school record 42ft 10.25in and placed second in the discus throw with 107ft 4in while Felicia Tsai won the discus with 114ft 9in and Maffei took third with 97ft 11in. Maffei also placed second in the javelin throw with a toss of 89ft 2in, Tsai won the hammer throw with a distance of 154ft 9in, and Madden placed second in the hammer with a throw of 121ft 2in.

The men’s team produced similar results with a team score of 122.50 points and numerous first place finishers. In the sprint events, Derek McGough won the 100m in 11.18, Owen Kellett won the 400m dash in 50.85, and Trevor Tersmette took first place in both the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.06 and the 400m hurdles in the time of 56.38.

In the mid-distance events, Joe Otto placed first in the 800m with a time of 1:56.68. The men’s 1600m relay team won their event as well with a combined time of 3:25.26.

In the field events, Tersmette also took first place in the high jump with a height of 6ft flat and second in the long jump with a mark of 21ft 10.00in. McGough led a team sweep in the long jump by finishing first with a jump of 22ft 3.75in. Other first place finishes were captured in the triple jump by Sharath Alampur with a jump of 42ft 4.75in, in the discus by Corey McCormack with a mark of 142ft 1in, in the hammer throw by Lance Chase with a distance of 164ft 4in, and in the javelin throw by James Motzkin with a mark of 174ft 6in.

The meet was a clear success for both the men’s and women’s teams as they defeated two of their biggest rivals in the Engineer’s Cup. Next weekend, the team plans to travel to the UCAA Championships, hosted by St. Lawrence in Canton, N.Y.
