The Rensselaer women’s lacrosse team returned home this past weekend after playing five straight games on the road, taking on the Yellowjackets of Rochester in their last game. It was the opening UCAA game for both teams.

The Red Hawks got on the board three minutes into the game when freshman Kathy Seward scored off a free position shot. The Yellowjackets responded two minutes later when Samantha Krawitzky fed a pass to Heidi Davies who beat junior goaltender Meghan Gaul.

RPI took over for the rest of the half recording four goals on eight shots to take a 5-1 lead into halftime. Junior Hillary Lahn put two of the goals past Rochester goaltender Stephanie Bristol. Senior Mary Roy and sophomore Rebecca Primm also recorded goals in the first half for Rensselaer.

In the second half, the Yellowjackets got back into the game, scoring two quick goals in the span of less than a minute to make the score 5-3. The Red Hawks didn’t seem fazed, responding with three goals in the span of five minutes to take an 8-3 lead with 17 minutes left.

Rochester tried to get back in it, scoring three goals in the rest of the half, but RPI got one as well and walked away with the win 9-6.

Roy and Lahn led the way offensively for the Red Hawks, each scoring a hat trick. Senior Mary Beth Cooley and Primm each had a goal and an assist. Davies led the Yellowjackets scoring three goals.

In goal, Bristol recorded four saves in the loss and Gaul had 10 for RPI.

With the win, the Red Hawks improved their record to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the UCAA while Rochester drops to 1-4 and 0-1. RPI returns to action tonight at 7 pm on Harkness Field against the Vassar Brewers. Admission is free.
