Activity building up for GM Week

Suzanne Peluso
President of the Union

Hello everyone. Its a busy time as the end of the semester approaches and work starts to build up. Grand Marshal Week will be a great chance to take a break and participate in the many events taking place. Several clubs and organizations will be putting on demonstrations or activities to encourage students to become involved. Clubs that will be represented throughout the week include rifle, fencing, waterpolo, cycling, isshrinyu karate, tae kwon do, and the ski club. The Rensselaer Aeronautical Federation, will be hosting their Fly By at Albany International Airport. Certified pilot members will take students on an aerial tour of the Rensselaer campus and downtown Albany, so that you can experience aviation in a small aircraft. If you are interested in signing up, you may visit their website at http://www.joelglickman.com/flyby/flybymain.wc for more information.

The Black Students’ Alliance will host a step show this Friday in the West Hall Auditorium. The show begins at 8 pm and tickets cost only $5. For those who have not seen a step show before, I highly recommend going; it is a very exciting performance to watch.

Mother’s will be hosting a concert this weekend on both Friday and Saturday at 8 pm. Eddie from Ohio is a quartet from Virginia, and will be performing on Friday as one of the popular new folk bands. On Saturday, Billy Novick and Guy Van Duser will perform almost any type of music with their instruments.

Aside from GM Week activities, you will notice several candidates walking around and attempting to speak with students for nominations. This week is very important for student government, and is the best opportunity for you to show some interest in student affairs. Take a chance and actually talk with candidates and then be sure to vote in the primaries and final elections. Last year was a great turnout for student participation in elections and I hope that this year shows the same results. And as always, if you vote in both elections you will get the new GM Week mug for free!

The Union Executive Board will be meeting this Thursday at 6 pm in the Patroon Room. With lots of business to get through we will be working hard and we always welcome your attendance. Especially for those who are interested in running for any offices, it is great to have a background knowledge of how each student body operates.

While on this tangent, a few of you may be interested in an E-Board position. Selection for the E-Board is very different from regular elections, in that E-Board members are appointed by the President of the Union.

Following GM Week, applications will be available to fill out and then you would interview with the newly elected PU. Before the end of the semester, the PU will select candidates who go before the Student Senate for approval.

If anyone is interested in this process, feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. For those running for elected offices, good luck and have fun with it!
