More track athletes qualify for NCAA meet

Dias sets another school record for women, Alleyne places third in Pentathlon for men

The Rensselaer indoor track and field team competed in the Denault Invitational Saturday, held at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. The meet was one of the larger indoor track invitationals with competition from: Alfred, Cornell, Hartwick, Houghton, Ithaca, Mansfield, RIT, Rochester, and St. Lawrence.

On the woman’s team, there were several athletes placing in the top six in a variety of events. Placing in multiple events was Jen Dias who placed third in both the 500m dash with a time of 1:18.68, a new school record, and in the triple jump with a mark of 10.64m.

Fellow classmate Carol Scalice earned second place in the long jump with her mark of 5.27m. Alyssa Coffey placed fifth in 3:05.05 and teammate Rebecca Rosenberg-Beran placed sixth in the time of 3:05.39.

The 1600m relay team, which included Alyssa Coffey, Erin Coffey, Michelle Fisher, and Rosenberg-Beran, came in third place with a total time of 4:21.34. In the field events, there were third place finishes by sophomore Felicia Tsai in the weight throw with a mark of 13.68m, and freshman Sue Madden in the shot put with her mark of 12.40m.

A fourth place finish was captured by senior Allison Benson in the pole vault with a height of 3.25m and Allison Tripodi tied for fifth in the high jump with a height of 1.55m.

The men’s team also had many athletes do well in their respective events and a couple who placed in multiple events.

Senior Dwaine Alleyne won both the triple jump with a mark of 14.98m and the 60m high hurdles with the time of 8.35. In the triple jump, Alleyne established a new school record with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark.

Classmate Derek McGough also placed in two events, earning third in the long jump with 6.69m and winning the 60m dash in the time of 7.14.

Also placing well in the track events was Owen Kellet who finished third in the 500m dash in 1:08.56, Joe Otto who won the 1000m run in 2:34.09, and his teammate Marty Blatz who finished second in the 1000m in 2:34.67.

On Sunday, seven members of the team competed in the NYSCTC Pentathlon Championship. Seniors Alleyne and Jon Currie, junior Trevor Tersmette, and freshmen Okey Ekwuabu and Adam Haskell competed for the men while juniors Becky Lock and Heather Maffei represented the women’s team. Three members earned scoring places, which will be added to the team totals at next weekend’s championship. Alleyne placed third while Tersmette and Lock each earning fifth place. Next weekend the team will be traveling to Canton, N.Y. to compete in the NYSCTC championship meet.
