The regular season ended on a positive note for the women’s hockey team, beating seventh-ranked Williams in a non-conference bout Sunday.

Having already clinched second in the ECAC Division III East, the Engineers traveled to Williams to take on the Ephs.

The Engineers looked to take control of the game early when freshman Holly O’Donohue pushed the puck past Williams’ goaltender Fern Senior at 5:27. Sondra Sherman earned the lone assist on the goal.

RPI played a very clean period, without taking a single penalty. Goaltender Rosina Schiff stopped all seven shots she saw.

The momentum swung to Williams’ corner in the second period. The Ephs scored a quick goal after the period break, just 24 seconds into the second. Molly Wasserman tallied her 25th goal of the season with help from Ellissa Popoff and Tori Scott to tie the game at one.

Williams’ momentum continued, despite the Ephs Scott and Annie Snodgrass taking penalties. The offense for Williams found the net again at 9:39, when Daley Kirby scored off an assist from Jen Kim.

Down by a goal, the Engineers scrambled to tie the game up. Bridget Rice tied the game at two at 14:49, with help from Paula Durham.

The third period was all Rensselaer. Sarah Daniel tallied the eventual game-winning goal at 7:06, getting a feed from Julie Aho. Aho got another helper at 12:36, this time assisting on a Meredith Langille goal. Christina Jankowski capped off the scoring for the Engineers, scoring the fifth RPI goal of the game unassisted at 17:34.

Rensselaer played a solid game offensively and defensively to beat another ranked opponent. They killed both power play opportunities against, and, despite getting out shot 23-19, took the game 5-2.

With the win, the Engineers climbed back into the rankings, placing tenth. Williams fell from the polls with the loss.

Rensselaer will now prepare for the much anticipated post-season. As the second seed, the Engineers will receive a bye, and will take on one of next week’s winners in the ECAC tournament’s first round.

Manhattanville, the league’s top seed, is set to host the tournament. Rensselaer will most likely have to face the Valiants in order to win the conference tourney. RPI split at home in two highly competitive games with Manhattanville back on Janurary 30 and 31.
