The Rensselaer women’s hockey team clinched second place in the ECAC Division III East, despite splitting a road weekend series against ECAC opponent the University of Massachusetts at Boston.
The Engineers’ offense controlled play in the beginning of the first period, getting several good scoring chances stopped by Beacon goalie Amanda Boucher. UMass-Boston’s first chance came at 6:33, when Engineer forward Bridget Rice took a two minute penalty for interference. The RPI defense held strong and killed the penalty.
After a scoreless first period, the Beacons came out swarming. At 18:49, Melissa Belmonte beat RPI goalie Rosina Schiff on a wrap-around, with help from Kerri Zizzo, to put the Beacons up 1-0.
Julie Aho took a questionable charging call at 3:21 of the third period, and the Beacons took advantage.
Zizzo passed the puck across to Kristin Wilson, who beat Schiff 5-hole to put UMass up by two.
Beacon Belmonte tallied her second goal of the game at 8:43, and RPI took their timeout to kill the UMass momentum.
RPI got the break they needed with 4:29 remaining in the game, when the Beacons took two penalties. Thirteen seconds later, Christina Jankowski put home a rebound from a Kari Rabatin blast to put the Engineers within two. The Engineers could not find the net again, losing 3-1.
The Engineers came out for Sunday’s game fired up and found the net early. Allyn Cooper scored the first goal 2:28 into the game with help from Katie Woodward. The RPI scoring did not stop there; Woodward tallied the second goal of the game from Welte and Deanna Dougherty at 15:59.
RPI killed off three penalties in the second period, but could not score on three power play opportunities. Neither team could find the net, and they skated into the third period with the Engineers up 2-0.
Beacon’s leading scorer, Andrea Ciarletta, tallied her 29th goal of the year two minutes into the third period to put UMass within one. The RPI defense held strong throughout the third, and they took the game 2-1.
With the split, RPI clinched second place in the ECAC Division III East, and a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
RPI ’s only remaining game is a non-conference bout versus Williams College next Sunday at 3 pm.
