Council continues tabulating surveys

Posted 02-18-2004 at 5:00PM

As many of you saw in The Poly, the results from the Spring 2003 Independent Council course surveys have been tabulated. Most of the results were posted in The Poly and more will be on our website soon. Fall 2003 surveys are currently being tabulated and the results will be in the pages of The Poly before registration for fall classes. The IC strives to help the students of this campus in any way possible.

Last month, we held the annual IC Pool Tournament. With 24 entrants, the tournament was a success and fun for all involved. Congratulations to all our winners. We plan to expand this event, holding one a semester for any and all students interested. The Independent Council also cosponsored the film The Lost Boys with UPAC Cinema. UPAC Cinema shows second run films every week for extremely low prices, providing cheap and fun entertainment for all students in a safe environment on campus.

We are currently working on a few projects. The first is a continuation of the campus versus off-campus housing cost analysis. The IC would like to discover why a growing number of both independents and greek students choose to live off-campus, and many begin to stop taking advantage of the facilities of the Union.

The second is one that is just beginning. We are looking at the library facilities and asking, “Are our textbooks available?” The Folsom Library does not have copies of currently offered course textbooks and the IC would like to know why. The cost of textbooks is high and rapidly increasing, if there were perhaps one or two copies of current textbooks available for students this would help lessen the financial burden for some. Is this something students are interested in? Is it even feasible? We do not know, but we would love to hear from you.

If this idea interests you or even if it does not, tell us what you think. You can send the IC an e-mail at ic@union.rpi.edu or come to one of our meetings on Tuesdays at 9 pm in the Student Government Suite. The Independent Council is always looking for student feedback and interested parties so feel free to e-mail us or stop by.
