This week, representatives from the RPI Student Senate met with the cabinet of the Faculty Senate to discuss the issue of grade modifiers. This proposal could represent a significant change in how student performance is quantified. It is in the best interests of all campus constituencies to become educated on the many facets of this issue, and offer us your philosophies on how we should proceed.
As currently proposed, a new grading system would be implemented some time in the future. In this system, student performance would be measured more precisely, by adding plus and minus modifiers to grades. While the specifics of the system to be implemented are still under consideration, the leading candidate would include grades of F, D, D+, C-, C, C+, B-, B, B+, A-, and A. While there would be no A+, a “mark of distinction” might be included on transcripts for those students performing well above A level.
The Polytechnic recently conducted a poll to gauge student feedback to a new system. The results were decidedly mixed. Opinions of the faculty are also mixed. It is important that we work together to develop a system that best fits the educational and cultural goals of our campus. To that end, the Faculty Senate will launch a grade modifiers website in the very near future. They have invited both faculty and students to submit position statements to launch discussion threads on this site. I would invite anyone interested in this issue to prepare a critical analysis of the effects of grade modifiers, and e-mail it to the Senate Secretary, Marcus Griep, at griepm@rpi.edu for inclusion in this site.
As this is a sensitive issue, we expect discussion to continue for some time. Please continue to check The Polytechnic for details on the launch of the web site and more information about modifiers.
On the lighter side of the news, Guster will be performing live at the Field House on Thursday, March 18. Tickets are now available through Ticketmaster and the usual outlets. This concert is a production of the Division of Student Life, with direct support from Dr. Jackson—who might even attend the show based on my strong recommendations—and the Rensselaer Union. I hereby give your friends the right to publicly shame you if you choose not to attend.
Senate meetings are Mondays at 9 pm in Union Room 3202. Everyone is welcome to attend. Your friendly, courteous student senators are also always available at senate-listens@rpi.edu. You can reach me directly at gm@rpi.edu.
