The Rensselaer men’s basketball team improved to 5-4 on the season with a 71-47 win over Stevens Tech on Friday, January 9 and a 76-68 victory over Middlebury on January 6.

The two wins enabled the Red Hawks to bounce back from a two game losing skid they suffered at the Williams Tournament in early January.

Jared Hite led the Red Hawks in the Stevens win with 19 points and six rebounds. Kori Massey and Neal Wesson also had solid performances with 10 points apiece. Massey had a game high four assists for Rensselaer.

Hite, who has averaged 19 points and 8.5 rebounds in the Middlebury and Stevens games was recently selected as UCAA Forward of the Week.

The Red Hawks shot an amazing 44.6 percent from the field in a game where every player on the Rensselaer bench saw the floor.

Rensselaer allowed Stevens to only score eight points in the first 10 minutes of the second half as the Red Hawks more than doubled their 33-23 halftime lead.

Prior to the Red Hawks’ effortless victory over Stevens, Rensselaer engaged in a tight battle with a respectable Middlebury team.

Rensselaer came out strong in the game and controlled the scoreboard for the entire first half taking a 39-34 lead into halftime with The Red Hawks shot just under 50 percent from the floor.

However, in the second half Middlebury tightened up on defense, contesting most of the Red Hawks’ shot attempts.

Rensselaer began to struggle from the field and with 11:51 left in the game Nick Anderson’s scored two of his team high 18 points by sinking back-to-back free throws giving Middlebury a 48-46 lead.

Down the stretch Rensselaer out shot and out hustled Middlebury, grabbing loose balls and knocking down clutch shots.

Matt Zepernick played inspired basketball leading Rensselaer in scoring and rebounding with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Hite also posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Paris Moore and John Van Schaick added 14 and 12 points respectively.

The Red Hawks must now begin its UCAA conference schedule with last year’s league champion, Hamilton, on Friday followed by a match-up with Hobart on Saturday.
