Local pizzerias have room to improve

Despite trend, Gino’s, Best Damn Pizza Shop, Domino’s Pizza satisfy testers

The annual Poly Pizza Poll fooled a few newcomers into thinking it was a night of fun, pizza, and friends. Not long after the pizzas started rolling in did they realize the pain of eating that much pizza, but for the sake of the poll, all hung in there. While some were greasy, others were burnt, and then there were some that simply made us all say “Ick!”

While the night started with some pizza from Elda’s that looked both nasty and as if the cheese and sauce were not meant to be together, we were still hoping that better pizzas were on their way. We moved on and tried a new shop in the area known as The Best Damn Pizza Shop, which quickly earned some high reviews from the tough testers. They placed second, and there was plenty of reason for it. The cheese was enjoyable, there was a good amount of sauce, there was just enough garlic, and it looked great.

This second stop brought some competition for the following pizzas, but hoping for a better pizza we started on the next pie from the I love NY Pizza store located on 4th Street. It was disappointing that this very hyped up store only delivered an average pizza whose crust was almost too sweet.

It was no surprise the next pizza ended up last on our list of pizza shops. Hoosick Pizzeria serves a pie that is flimsy, greasy, salty, and sauceless. At this point no stomach was faring very well and we moved onward to the one and only Notty Pine Restaurant, which of course only brought more pain. The best parts of this test subject were its soft crust, inconsistent sauce, and strange looking cheese, however the included piece of hair soon kept this pizza in low standings.

It was coming to that time of the night when the test subjects could suffer with bad pizza no longer, which is why Valenti’s Pizzeria delivered their pie to our door. It fared better even with its salty sauce and bad smell since it did have a nice crust. Finally, the doorbell rang, and it was Domino’s Pizza, which brought its frozen pie that still tasted good despite its slightly mushy crust. The next arrival was I love NY Pizza, which was confusing at first until we realized that it was the one from Hoosick St. and it was definitely a decent pizza.

After this, many could hardly believe there was still more to come. The next pizza was from DeFazio’s, and was far from pleasant with its burnt crust and sweet sauce. Pizza pollers still held in there for the final pizza pie, which was from Pizza Bella, and tasted overall like it was worth the wait. Through all of this suffering there was only one light that shined out from the hardly delicious pizzas was that of Gino’s, which happened to arrive some time after Hoosick, and hailed responses along the lines of: “Yum!” “It’s not greasy!” and “Good distribution of sauce and cheese.”

While our pollers did not know what pizzas they were ingesting at each moment, they were definitely good sports throughout the night, and hopefully next year the pizzas will be a bit more appetizing.
