Independent Council
Council reflects on work this semester

Matthew Newman
Independent Council President

The end of the school year is upon us all. Final exams are approaching, final projects are due, a growing number of freshmen are scrambling to finish the CAD train, and of course I have to write my final article for the semester in The Poly.

At this time I’d like to reflect on the semester. I mean, what has the Independent Council accomplished for the semester. Well, we have completed the tallying of last semester’s course surveys. The results will be in the pages of The Poly at the beginning of next semester. We have gathered some feedback from the undergraduate classes for items of concern. The Independent Council has used this feedback in order to come up with a few projects for next semester, such as doing a cost analysis of living off-campus as opposed to on-campus both here and at other schools.

The IC would like to discover why a growing number of both independents and greek students choose to live off-campus, and many begin to stop taking advantage of the facilities of the Union. Also, we have continued to survey classes and await the return of said surveys from this semester.

Next semester, I would like to see our projects come to fruition. I’d like to see the results of our research being brought to the attention of the students. We will be sponsoring a pool tournament the second week of next semester and the IC hopes to see a decent sized turnout. The IC plans to have results of this semester’s surveys prepared and in The Poly before course registration for the Fall 2004 semester so that students can use it as a sort of guide to what classes they’d like to take outside of their normal course load. Personally, I would like the IC to accomplish a great deal next semester and I know we can do this with your support. If you’d like to know more about the IC’s projects, e-mail me at ic@union. rpi.edu.

On a final note, I’d like to say good luck to all of you in your endeavors this last week. Good luck on final exams, projects, or papers. The Independent Council would also like to wish you all a safe and happy winter break.
