Men, women tally first win of season

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams beat the Vassar Brewers Sunday 145-70 and 167-79, respectively. The meet was the first win of the season for both teams.

RPI swept the men’s three meter diving event with Greg Derevianko scoring 207.15, Anthony Motisi 162.72, and Andrew Zacher 157.95. For the women, juniors Melissa Hershey and Jennifer Keyes finished first and second in both the 1m and 3m diving events. Hershey scored a NCAA qualifying 250.65 points in the 1m. Her score is also a school and pool record.

Ashley Schaefer, Sara Chadwick, Tara Murnane, and Catherine Fredlund started the meet with a win in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:59.89. The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Lea Marlor, Murnane, Fredlund, and Karel Schnebele combined their efforts for a win with a time of 1:47.31.

In addition to assisting the relay, Schnebele also won the 500 free with a time of 5:46.7 and the 200 free with a time of 2:08.31. Meghan Hartman tallied wins in the 400 individual medley, 200 backstroke, and 200 breaststroke. Hartman provisionally qualified for the NCAA Meet in the 400 IM with a time of 4:43.58.

On the men’s side, Rob Olivo, Joe Rutkowski, Mike Hoefling, and Chris Weed combined to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:49.12. The team of Brett Stevens, Mike Scibelli, Eric Blankenmeyer, and Andrew Howerton took second with a time of 1:49.55.

Junior Pat Fell won the grueling 1650 free with a time of 17:39.91 and the 200 butterfly in 2:06.69. Alvin Peh and Scibelli finished first and second in the 400 IM with times of 4:25.99 and 4:26.76. The 200 free ended with Hoefling taking first and Olivo second. Matt Digeser and Blaine Trafton sprinted to first and second in the 50 free with times of 23.80 and 24.02. Digeser won a close race in the 100 free with a time of 54.27, just beating out Vassar’s James Dodington by .06 seconds.

The Engineers’ next competition is the UCAA Championships on December 6 and 7. The diving portion of the meet will take place at RPI, while Union will host the swimming portion.
