In order to better serve the students at RPI, a review of academic advising was conducted to improve the current advising system. This review is a continuation of the advising task force which was started last spring.
Among new agendas from the review are an early alert system, a plan of study, and advisor training. These new agendas will be implemented gradually starting with the freshman class. The new programs will be more extensive in reaching out to students with involvement from other organizations throughout the school, in addition to the Advising and Learning Assistance Center.
The early alert system, which has already been implemented for freshmen, will see an improvement. The system is an early warning system for students who are earning a D or below in any classes. The new improved system sees more courses added to the early alert system. The advisors are to be told about their advisees’ situation so that help can be given before the situation worsens, while students involved will receive notices relating to their academic performance. The same information will be referred to Advising and Learning Assistance Center so the right measures can be taken by both the students and school.
The early alert system is also designed to help to recognize non-academic problems that could be a disturbance in students’ academic performance. The committee is willing to go beyond the students’ school-related lives in order to help solve their personal problems with cooperation from other organizations on campus.
According to Gary Gabriele, vice provost, “We are willing to help students that are having problems that have nothing to do with academics. Problems like issues from home and financial aid can be a burden for students. For this, we are getting help from the Office of the First Year Experience, Dean of Student’s Office, and the counseling center.”
Another program proposed by the review is the plan of study for every student. The plan proposes that every student will meet with his advisor at least once per year to ensure that students are taking the right classes at the right time. If the student does not follow the study plan, the advisor will receive notification from the Registrar. The committee is working on enforcing this annual meeting. Each meeting will be reported by the advisor to the Registrar’s office. If no meeting is reported between student and advisor, the student will not be allowed to log into the Student Information System.
Training for the advisors is also among other plans of action of the advising review. This is compulsory for advisors of freshmen. Through this training, advisors are to be updated about the current advising systems and processes. This training not only involves the Advising Center but also the FYE, DOSO, and the counseling center.
At the end of the training, Gabriele said, “advisors will know how to detect warning signs of students who are having problems, and will know the process for solving any problem using the resources that we have throughout the campus.”
