The women’s hockey team, fresh off their 4-4 tie at Union, opened their home season Saturday against the Division I Sacred Heart Pioneers.
The first period flew by for the Engineers, with few stoppages marring the flow of the game. RPI’s offense seemed to be in control of the game, tallying six shots and holding the puck in the Sacred Heart zone for much of the period.
Pioneers’ goalie Jennifer Barris held strong throughout the first period, making several tough stops en route to six saves.
The second period saw the Engineers’ pressure continue. Despite taking a pair of penalties, RPI continued their excellent offense push. At 15:40, Pioneer defender Kylie Ammel took a tripping penalty. Sacred Heart scrambled to kill the RPI power play, and a minute later, Pioneer Jane Auxier interfered with an Engineer in front of the net and went to the box. RPI capitalized on the five on three opportunity 13 seconds later when Katie Temple pushed the puck into the net off assists from Katie Woodward and Kari Rabatin. The Engineers stayed strong through the end of the power play, but could not find the net again, and the period ended 1-0.
The Engineer pressure continued in the third period, and paid off just 4:44 into the period. Woodward tallied an unassisted goal off a Sacred Heart turnover in front of their net to push the score to 2-0.
RPI did not let up after taking the two goal lead, and at 6:59, the hard working line of Julie Welte, Julie Aho, and Meredith Langille found the back of the net. Welte fired the puck through a gaggle of Pioneer defenders off a feed from Langille to give the Engineers a three goal lead. Allyn Cooper also assisted on the third goal.
The Engineer defense put forth a crushing effort, holding the D-I Sacred Heart to just 11 shots. RPI kept the Pioneer offense away from the front of the net, allowing Rosina Schiff to tally her first shutout of the year, stopping all 11 shots she faced.
RPI will continue their season at home Friday night against Utica. The puck drops at 7 pm at the Houston Field House. Admission is free.
