Junior Sondra Sherman plays both field and ice hockey at RPI. This year, she was named captain of the field hockey team as well.
Sherman started playing ice hockey when she was 10, playing mostly with guys until she joined a girl’s travel team in high school. Her brother encouraged her to try out for field hockey in high school, and she has been playing both sports since.
When asked about the time commitment of playing two sports and attending classes, she said, “It’s what I like…I love the feeling of exhaustion.”
Both teams enjoyed a lot of success last year, and this year looks to be shaping up the same way. The field hockey team, which is 6-9 overall and 3-4 in conference play, is playing in the UCAA Championships on November 8 and 9. Sherman feels that the team plays best under pressure, and she is confident that the team will play its best against William Smith.
As captain, Sherman has worked on keeping up the team’s intensity and motivation. She says that “working with a team that wants the same thing as me” is a big influence for her.
The ice hockey team had a rough start with the passing of Head Coach Bill Cahill, but Sherman says the team will carry on with what BC taught them. Sherman, a transfer student from Mercyhurst, said, “BC was the whole reason I came [to RPI].”
John Burke has taken over the head coaching duties this season, and he’s got some pretty big shoes to fill. Sherman believes that Burke is a great choice for the job, and will take the team in the right direction.
Bridget LaNoir, the head coach of the field hockey team and assistant coach of the ice hockey team, is where Sherman wants to be. LaNoir, a graduate of RPI, played both field hockey and ice hockey, just like Sherman.
In regards to the upcoming ice hockey season, Sherman remarked, “We want to play amazing hockey.”
